The history of Baccarat

Baccarat is one of the most popular casino games in the world, found in both land-based gambling venues and at online gambling sites. While the exact origins of the game are unclear, it’s widely believed that Baccarat originated in Italy in the 14th century. Baccarat then made its way to France in the 1490s and soon after, it gained popularity amongst the French nobility.

It’s also said that Baccarat was played in the US during the early 20th century, but there are no official records in the 1931 Nevada casino gambling legislation to support that statement. Nevertheless, it was only in 1958 that a variant of Baccarat called ‘Chemin de Fer’ was introduced in the Vegas casinos. Soon after, the US saw the advent of another variant called Mini-Baccarat, which quickly became one of the most popular versions of the game.

Side bets in Baccarat

When playing Baccarat online, the side bets available to you depend on a number of things. It depends on the type of online Baccarat game you’ve chosen to play. It also depends on the software provider that’s powering the game.

That said, there are still some common side bets that you can find at many online Baccarat tables. These include:

Perfect Pair - This is one of the most exciting side bets in Baccarat. It pays 25:1 if the first two dealt cards to either the Banker or the Player are a suited pair.

Super 5 - This side bet pays 12:1 if the Banker’s hand totals to six.

B Pair - A side bet that pays 11:1 if the Banker’s first two cards make a pair.

P Pair - A side bet that pays 11:1 if the Player’s first two cards make a pair.

Either Pair - This side bet pays 5:1 if the first two cards dealt to either the Baker or Player makes a pair.

Rules of Online Baccarat

As with many other casino games, the game of Baccarat involves the use of cards as well. The 10, Jack, Queen, and King cards carry no value in Baccarat. The cards 2 through 9 in each suit are worth their face value, whereas getting an Ace is valued at 1.

In Baccarat, all the gaming action unfolds on the table, which has 14 player numbers written on it, from 1 to 15. Besides, there are three bet boxes directly played above each player number - the first is the Player Bet Box, the second is the Banker Bet Box, and the third is the Tie Bet Box. Note that the Player Bet Box and the Banker Bet Box have higher chances of winning than the Tie Bet Box.

When playing Baccarat online, there are three different bet options available - the player bet, the banker bet, and the tie bet. As a player, you indicate the bet you want to make by placing coins on your preferred bet box.

At the start of the game, the dealer gives two numbered front-facing cards to the player in the player bet box. In the same way, two numbered cards are dropped to the banker in the banker bet box.

Then the numbers on the cards given to you are summed up and subtracted by 10. This is done in order to give you a point number. For instance, getting cards with face values 8 and 6 will provide you with the number 4 after the addition and subtraction are done.

For bettors who get a point number between 0 and 5 after the addition and subtraction are done, they are given a third card to improve their winning chances. If the bettor has a value over five, the banker receives another card if their value is five or less. While having a point number between 6-7 have a stand, getting an 8 or 9 automatically wins you the game and ends the round.

Popular Baccarat Variants

Being a popular casino classic that has been around for centuries, the game of Baccarat has accumulated a lot of regional variants. Below are some of the most popular Baccarat variants to try online.

Classic Baccarat

This is the traditional Baccarat variant that involves 3 dealers and up to 14 players. Here, each game round takes approximately up to 50 seconds, and there is often only the Pair side-bet option available. Classic Baccarat is still one of the most popular variants of Baccarat that is enjoyed by millions of players across the globe.

Mini-Baccarat

This is an exciting variant of Baccarat that is becoming increasingly popular among casino players. Mini-Baccarat essentially features the same rules and purpose as traditional Baccarat, but there are a few notable differences. This Baccarat variant features only 1 dealer as opposed to 3 in classic Baccarat. Also, Mini-Baccarat comes with smaller minimum bets, making it accessible to players of all bankrolls.

Punto Banco

Punto Banco is another popular Baccarat variant that can be found at almost every online casino. This Baccarat variant is played with 6-8 decks and involves up to 14 players. The rules of Punto Banco are essentially the same traditional Baccarat, with the name difference coming from how the player and the banker are labeled. Here, the player is referred to as “Punto” while the banker is called “Bunco”.

Live Speed Baccarat

As the name implies, each game round in Live Speed Baccarat is finished in less time. Unlike a usual game round that takes over 50 seconds in classic Baccarat, it’s completed in less than 30 seconds here. This means that cards are dealt face-up and there’s less time to review results or place a new wager.

No Commission Baccarat

Almost all the regular Baccarat games come with a 5% commission fee. A No Commission Baccarat table removes this commission fee that is taken from all winning Banker bets. But note that this Baccarat variant offers a lower payoff on a winning hand if the Banker lands on a specific number.

Baccarat Game Providers

Given the popularity of Baccarat among casino players, there are numerous well-renowned software providers that offer live Baccarat tables. Below are some popular game providers that power Baccarat games at most online casinos:

For Baccarat fans, the developer has several exciting Baccarat variants, which include Mini-Baccarat, Prestige Baccarat, 7 Seat Baccarat, Baccarat Squeeze, and many more. Most of the Baccarat games by Playtech come with side bet options, making for a highly entertaining and rewarding gaming experience.

Is Online Baccarat legal in India?

The legal situation surrounding online gambling in India is unclear and complicated. This is because there are no federal laws that explicitly state whether playing casino games for real money in the country is legal or not.

What we currently have in India are state laws, but those too are present in just a few states. For instance, it’s legal for licensed casino operators to offer both land-based and online gambling services in the states of Goa and Sikkim, but casinos are banned in the state of Maharashtra. Also, many Indian states don’t have laws that back or prohibit online gambling within their respective territories.

That being said, Indian players can choose to play online Baccarat games with licensed international casinos. As these casinos are based outside India, they’re not subject to Indian gambling laws, allowing you to play Baccarat for real money online.
